Brothers of the Head

A most entertaining volume of memoir from a legend of science fiction.A writer’s life can be exciting, unexpected, routine, lonely – and sometimes all on the same day! Brian Aldiss recounts the highs and lows of his professional career in this entertaining and revealing book. Here are his adventures with publishers, booksellers, agents, other authors, and readers. Here are some of the complex questions of what makes and sustains a successful modern writer. The tales he tells are wry, witty, informative – beginning with his first job at the Oxford bookshop that was to be the setting for his first book of fiction, The Brightfount Diaries, and ending as he undergoes one of the most gruelling experiences of a writer’s life: the publication of a new novel, in this case his brilliant Forgotten Life.

Bury My Heart At W. H. Smith’s

A Space Opera. An ambitious, incredible – Space Opera!A science-fiction story which occasionally breaks off into song – a genuine space opera.Quite possibly Aldiss’s strangest novel, and that is saying something.

Eighty Minute Hour

In the future, mankind’s physiology has been improved. Utopia prevails throughout the solar system, in a communistic system of government. When six of its members are lost on an unregenerate planet, the stresses begin to show.In the future, mankind’s physiology has been improved. Utopia prevails throughout the solar system, in a communistic system of government. When six of its members are lost on an unregenerate planet, the stresses begin to show. This novel is part of the Brian Aldiss Collection. The Friday Project are reissuing many of Aldiss’ works, including over 300 short stories, in print and eBook.

Enemies of the System

Mars is in crisis. Ten years after its formation the Earth colony on the red planet has yet to produce a healthy child. Every baby has been deformed and stillborn. With Earth overpopulated and at war, the success of the Mars experiment is crucial to the survival of the human race. Something must be done to ensure its future. In Finches of Mars, Brian Aldiss has produced a fascinating and thought-provoking novel that considers the practicalities of man’s exploration of space. It is shot through with the trademark wit and visionary philosophy which have been ever present across the seven decades of his writing career.

Finches of Mars

A Theban adventure from the master of Science-Fiction, here proving himself adept at imagining historical worlds. Part of the Brian Aldiss Collection. In Jocasta, Aldiss brings vividly to life the ancient world of dreaming Thebes: a world of sun-drenched landscapes, golden dust, sphynxes, Furies, hermaphroditic philosophers, ghostly apparitions and ambivalent gods. Jocasta is also a strikingly effective contemplation of an older world order where the human mind is still struggling to understand itself and the nature of the world around it.

Jocasta: Wife and Mother

Two of Aldiss’ essay collections from the mid-1980s in one volume. In this warm, chatty, opinionated collection of essays, Brian Aldiss tells the reader a bit about his youth, holds forth on the position of science fiction within the literary and scientific worlds and reveals some of the processes at work in his own writing. This volume also includes the companion collection …And the Lurid Glare of the Comet.

The Monster Trilogy

The groundbreaking novel about sex and growing up, available as an ebook for the first time.Longlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize, The Hand-Reared Boy was the first literary novel to honestly, and explicitly, explore the sexual awakening of a young man. Quite shocking when first published in 1970, it is now considered a classic. It is the first book in the Horatio Stubbs Trilogy.Brian says: “Young Horatio Stubbs suffers the pangs of adolescence, but is weaned from the pleasures of masturbation by the delights offered by his school’s nursing sister, who is not all she seems. The novel became a great scandal in England, where it was rejected by thirteen publishers, and caused a lawsuit – as a result of which it became a bestseller.”

When Joe Bodenland is suddenly transported back in time to the year 1816, his first reaction is of eager curiosity rather than distress…This is Aldiss’ response to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, available for the first time in eBook. When Joe Bodenland is suddenly transported back in time to the year 1816, his first reaction is of eager curiosity rather than distress. Certainly the Switzerland in which he finds himself, with its charming country inns, breathtaking landscapes and gentle, unmechanised pace of life, is infinitely preferable to the America of 2020 where the games of politicians threaten total annihilation. But after meeting the brooding young Victor Frankenstein, Joe realises that this world is more complex than the one he left behind. Is Frankenstein real, or are both Joe and he living out fictional lives?BRIAN SAYS: Developed as a tribute to Mary Shelley’s work, following the writing of Billion Year Spree, with its proposal, since widely adopted, that Frankenstein is the first seminal work to which the label “SF” can be logically attached. Frankenstein makes a female monster to accompany the male; Bodenland, lost from our time, hunts down first Frankenstein and then the monsters, becoming monstrous himself in the process.
