"The Daughters of the Late Colonel" is a 1920 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published in the London Mercury in May 1921.
In bed, Constantia suggests giving her late father's top hat to the porter, but her sister Josephine disagrees. After thinking about letters to be sent to Ceylon, they hear a noise coming from a mouse. Constantia thinks how sad it must be for the mouse with no crumbs around. The last time the sisters saw their father, Nurse Andrews was stationed by the bedside; the Colonel opened only one eye, glaring at his daughters before dying. Nurse Andrews, whom they invited to stay for a week after the Colonel died, is annoying them by overeating. Mr. Farolles, a clergyman who offers to arrange the funeral, visits and suggests they take Holy Communion, to feel better, but the sisters demur.

The Singing Lesson, written by Katherine Mansfield, is all about a surprising day of a music teacher's life. Taken from Katherine's «The Garden Party and Other Stories» collection, it's a short story written in third person from an unknown narrator's perspective. – Miss Meadows, a music teacher, receives a letter from her fiancé which states quite plainly that Basil, her fiancé, isn't ready to marry her and feels that the marriage would fill him with disgust. The word «disgust» is scratched lightly and written above it is the word «regret». Naturally she's filled with despair, anger & sadness. And due to her bad mood she sees everyone and everything in a negative light. Her usual calm and cheery demeanor turns gloomy and angry that day and this change doesn't go unnoticed by her students.

In a German Pension is a 1911 collection of short stories by the writer Katherine Mansfield; her first published collection. All but three of the stories were originally published in The New Age edited by A. R. Orage; the first to appear was «The Child-Who-Was-Tired». The last three were first published in this collection.
The stories were written after her stay in Bad Wörishofen, a German spa town in 1909, where she was taken by her mother after her disastrous marriage, pregnancy and miscarriage. Some reflect the coarse habits and arrogance of Germans, and some refer to the exploitation and repression of women by men.

"The Young Girl" is a 1920 short story written by Katherine Mansfield. Mrs. Raddick's and her beautiful daughter waited on the steps of the casino. The daughter was incredibly beautiful with flushed cheeks, blue eyes, and golden curls. She «might have just dropped from this radiant heaven» (79), and Mrs. Raddick seemed to think so too – if her appreciative glances were any indication. The girl; however, appeared only bored as if heaven had been full of casinos and they no longer held any interest for her.

The Luft Bad is a short story by Katherine Mansfield: I think it must be the umbrellas which make us look ridiculous. The Modern Soul is more about characters than action. The story begins with the stereotype of the pompous German music professor explaining to the young English narrator why he incessantly eats cherries: «There is nothing like cherries for producing free saliva after trombone playing, especially after Grieg's 'Ich Liebe Dich'» He's cherry eating is connected with a consuming desire for women. The two older Germans, the Professor and the German actress' mother, talk incessantly of food and soul. They agree that the English are «fish blooded,» cold and without soul. The modern soul is posture and hypocrisy; the varieties of sexual attraction are puzzles and complexities that human beings cannot handle. Characterisation

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.‘The red and yellow tulips, heavy with flowers, seemed to lean upon the dusk. A grey cat, dragging its belly, crept across the lawn, and a black one, its shadow, trailed after.’Powerful and evocative, each of Katherine Mansfield’s short stories is a masterclass in the form that made her name. Cut tragically short at the age of 34, hers was a life of passion that took her from New Zealand to Bohemian London and Paris. These various landscapes are reflected with verve in her writing, and are peopled with astutely and intimately drawn characters: lonely Miss Brill in her ermine, Colonel Pinner’s adrift daughters, mysterious Pearl Fulton.Praised by Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence, Mansfield’s inimitable stories are essential reading.
