Focusing on recent developments in innovative energy conversion, this second volume features emerging applications with the capacity to transform the entire energy economy. Specific examples include the development of sulfonated polyarylether-type polymers as proton exchange membranes for high- and medium-temperature polymer electrode fuel cells (PEFC), with an entire section devoted to the rapidly expanding field of materials development for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). The result is a detailed and invaluable source of information for those involved in the chemical, material science and engineering fields of power generation.

Membrane Technology, Volume 2

Membrane Technology – a clean and energy saving alternative to traditional/conventional processes. Developed from a useful laboratory technique to a commercial separation technology, today it has widespread and rapidly expanding use in the chemical industry. It has established applications in areas such as hydrogen separation and recovery of organic vapors from process gas streams, and selective transport of organic solvents, and it is opening new perspectives for catalytic conversion in membrane reactors. Membrane technology provides a unique solution for industrial waste treatment and for controlled production of valuable chemicals. This book outlines several established applications of membranes in the chemical industry, reviews the available membranes and membrane processes for the field, and discusses the huge potential of this technology in chemical processes. Each chapter has been written by an international leading expert with extensive industrial experience in the field.

Membrane Technology

Examining artificial membranes in terms of biocompatibility, drug delivery and controlled release, this book illustrates how existing membrane technologies are being exploited and advanced in emerging medical applications. This work, edited by internationally recognized experts, has author contributions from prominent members of this field who discuss details of all aspects of this technology. This volume provides broad, yet detailed information on synthetic membranes and their applications, including dialysis and artificial kidneys, gas exchange, artificial lungs, devices to assist liver function, and membrane affinity chromatography.
