Daniel Defoe’s faith-fi lled The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe fi nds Crusoe bored with his prosperity and consumed by an irresistible longing to return to the island he left many years before. Along with his trusty servant and companion, Friday, he embarks on a harrowing high-seas adventure that takes them to China, over the Russian steppes, and into Siberia. The story is speculated to be partially based on Moscow embassy secretary Adam Brand’s journal detailing the embassy’s journey from Moscow to Peking from 1693 to 1695.
