D’altronde, autenticità può significare anche altro, un conto è ritenere che la Sindone conservata a Torino sia il Telo che avvolse la salma di Cristo, un conto è semplicemente ipotizzarne l’anzianità bimillenaria; e se sul fatto che questo famoso Lenzuolo avesse avvolto Gesù non prendo posizione, ritengo che prevalgano le ragioni per pensare che sia antichissimo, essendo attualmente molti i dati a favore e solo due i contrastanti, di cui uno soltanto pare, e sempre di meno, oggettivamente considerabile: le prove di radiodatazione su campioni sindonici che fissarono l’anzianità del Lenzuolo all’epoca basso medievale; ma esse sono sempre più contestate scientificamente e non solo da studiosi cristiani. L’altro motivo d’avversione alla Sindone, peraltro fortissimo, è un preconcetto, tanto di laici anticlericali quanto di molti, forse della maggioranza, dei cristiani riformati, preclusione che porta i primi a ignorare l’argomento quando non a deriderlo e conduce fedeli protestanti a condannare la venerazione della Sindone la quale, pregiudizialmente, è per essi mera “icona” creata da mani d’uomo: accolgono la condanna veterotestamentaria del “farsi immagini”, nata storicamente in funzione anti idolatrica, sebbene i cattolici sostengano che il divieto vigesse solo prima che Dio s’incarnasse in Gesù mostrandosi al mondo come “immagine”, cioè come carnale figura umana, senz’alcuna possibilità d’equivocare con gl’idoli; ci sono peraltro cattolici negatori dell’autenticità, intesa nel senso che la Sindone sarebbe proprio quella che avvolse Gesù, e si trovano protestanti che ne suppongono l’autenticità, quanto meno nel secondo senso del termine quando non, addirittura, nel primo. In ogni caso, va ben sottolineato che la fede dei cristiani non si basa affatto sulla Sindone di Torino ma, storicamente, sulla testimonianza orale apostolica della risurrezione di Cristo raccolta entro il I secolo nei libri del Nuovo Testamento, giunta fino a noi perché conservata dalla Chiesa nei secoli, con controllo sistematico della corrispondenza delle nuove copie alle precedenti, iniziando dalle più vecchie. Con tale spirito si presenta questa seconda edizione del saggio di Guido Pagliarino sulla Sindone, realizzata considerando nuovi dati e sanando un paio di inesattezze del precedente libro, uscito anni fa e ormai fuori catalogo. El autor vuelve varias veces sobre los mismos argumentos, desde perspectivas diversas: el lector no puede considerar tales reiteraciones como pleonásticas y mucho menos involuntarias: la obra comprende una parte de presentación general (en algunos puntos, por considerarlo útil, empezando a profundizar, como en el caso de las conclusiones médicas del anatomopatólogo Pierluigi Baima Bollone) y una sección, dividida en capítulos, con un tratamiento específico de argumentos particulares ya tocados en la primera parte, como por ejemplo las fotografías sindónicas, y una cronología. No tiene el fin de inducir a creer que la Sábana de Turín haya envuelto realmente el cuerpo de Cristo hace un par de milenios o, como se dice habitualmente, que sea auténtica. Por otro lado, autenticidad puede significar también otra cosa, pues una cosa es sostener que la conservada en Turín sea la Sábana Santa de Cristo y otra es sencillamente defender su ancianidad bimilenaria. Y si bien no me posiciono acerca del hecho de que haya envuelto a Jesús, sostengo que prevalecen las razones para pensar que la Sábana Santa es muy antigua, habiendo actualmente muchos datos a favor y solo dos en contra, de los cuales solamente uno parece considerable objetivamente, y cada vez menos, que es la prueba de radiodatación de muestras de la Sindone, que, como veremos, fijó la antigüedad de la Sábana en la época bajomedieval, prueba que sin embargo cada vez está más contestada científicamente, y no solo por estudiosos cristianos. El otro motivo de aversión a la Sábana Santa, por otro lado bastante fuerte, es un prejuicio, tanto de laicos anticlericales como de muchos, tal vez de la mayoría, de los cristianos reformados, una prevención que lleva a los primeros a ignorar los argumentos, cuando no a burlarse de ellos, e impulsa a los fieles protestantes a condenar la veneración de la Sabana Santa, la cual, para ellos, por sus prejuicios, es un mero «icono» creado por la mano de un hombre: asumen la condena veterotestamentaria de las «falsas imágenes», que nació históricamente contra la idolatría, aunque los católicos sostienen que la prohibición estuvo vigente solo antes de que Dios se encarnase en Jesús mostrándose al mundo como «imagen», es decir como figura carnal humana, sin ninguna posibilidad de confundirse con los ídolos. También hay, por cierto, católicos negadores de su autenticidad, entendida en el sentido de que la Sábana Santa sea realmente la que envolvió el cuerpo de Jesús y se encuentran protestantes que sí suponen su autenticidad, al menos en el segundo sentido del término, cuando no además en el primero. En todo caso, hay que dejar bien claro que la fe cristiana no se basa en la Sábana Santa de Turín, sino, históricamente, en el testimonio oral apostólico de la resurrección de Cristo recogida en el siglo I en los libros del Nuevo Testamento y que llega a nosotros porque lo conserva la Iglesia a lo largo de los siglos, con el control sistemático de la correspondencia de las nuevas copias con las precedentes, a partir de las más antiguas. Con ese espíritu se presenta esta segunda edición del ensayo de Guido Pagliarino sobre la Sábana Santa, realizada considerando nuevos datos y corrigiendo un par de inexactitudes del libro precedente, publicado hace años y ya descatalogado.
